27th April 2025- Barkisland- league
After a challenging season in 2024, the Sunday side started to make amends with a convincing 6 wicket win away at Barkisland, where we’d been bowled out for less than 30 the previous season, so more than a modicum of revenge was taken. New skipper Collins was to the helm for the first time and a mix of youth and experience took to the field. We rolled our hosts out for 107 with our juniors taking 8 of the 10 wickets to fall. Ajay and Phil also chipped in with a wicket a piece, but Matthew and Finlay took four wickets between them, but Jack Fellows was the star of the show taking four wickets for 6 runs from his five overs.
Anyone who followed the 2024 season will know that chasing a total was never our forte, but Phil Earle (37*) and Chris Parker (24) were the main protagonists in our chase to ensure there was no Sunday team shuffle and we won with just less than 15 overs of the match left. 20 points- lovely stuff.
11th May 2025- Upper Hopton - league
A fortnight later, we were back down to earth with a bump with a heavy defeat away at Upper Hopton – again with the match played in glorious sunshine. We bowled well to restrict our hosts to 170 all out with Jack once again in the wickets (2 for 20) and Nick Langhorn (back at the club after a season away) taking 2 for 14. Star of the show was Phil “the twirl” Earle who took 4 for 29 off 6.2 overs with a couple of sharp bits of work behind the stumps from Rohi helping Phil with his wickets.
When extras is your second top scorer with 7, then you’re always going to be in a bit of bother, so I won’t linger on this, but well done for Rohit for top scoring with 14. Still 33 players picked for three games giving everyone who wanted a match, and we continue to bring our junior players (and our older ones) through and giving them the opportunity to shine.
18th May 2025- Greetland - league
A similar tale of woe at Greetland the following week where there were some dodgy decisions made on a very dodgy wicket. Matt Rose and Nick Langhorn, the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 36 and 3 for 48 respectively, with juniors Lucas Veitch and Matthew Grundy also in the wickets. Bill Keighley (21) and Dave Brown (19) were the only players to reach double figures as we slumped to a paltry 56 all out.
25th May 2025- Thornton- league
Our final match of May and our first at home in 2025 produced the most complete performance from our Sunday side in a good few years, in-spite of a gail blowing up at the Astleys.. Batting first, we racked up maximum batting points for the first time in a long time by scoring 210 for 5 from our 40 overs. Robin set the tone of the innings with an aggressive 52 from 56 balls before Chris (27), Ajay (60 not out) and Rohit (38) carried on from the good start made and despite two wickets being lost when our score was on 88. The usual Sunday section shuffle did not materialise and despite losing Matthew for no score, Ajay and Rohit but on 84 runs for the 5th wicket. Skipper Collins fittingly finished off our innings with a towering six straight down the ground.
It was the juniors to the fore in the Thornton reply as Fin (4 for 25) and Noah Gould (3 for 28) took crucial opposition wickets at the right time to ensure that we’d have a comfortable 67 run victory. Even sweeter was that the first of Noah’s three wickets was his first taken in senior cricket and Fin’s 4 wickets coming off the back of taking wickets for the first team in the 1st round of the Parish Cup. Aswin, Robin and Paul chipping in with the other three wickets to seal an emphatic victory and a most welcome 20 points.
